CLIFFORD LUMPKIN, b. 14 Apr 1907, Blount Co., Alabama; d. 25 Jul 1938. The Chattanooga Daily Times, 25 Jul 1938; Pinned By Car, 2 Men Drowned In Suck Creek; Bodies of Clifford Lumpkin, Ovid Pickett Recovered 8 Hours After Plunge; 2 Boys Make Discovery; Auto Left Road on Curve at Bridge and Hurtled Down a 30-Foot Embankment Two former TVA iron workers trapped in their automobile drowned in swiftly moving Suck Creek early yesterday morning when the car somersaulted down a steep stone embankment at the Suck Creek bridge into ten feet of water. Found more than eight hours after the time the car is believed to have gone into the creek, the men were identified as Clifford D. Lumpkin, 31, of 804 Battery Place and, and Ovid Pickett, 28, of Whitwell, Tenn. County Patrolman J.J. Sells fixed the time of the accident between 12 and 1 o'clock yesterday morning, basing his conclusion on a statement made by Mrs. Della Lusk, a resident of the Suck Creek section, who said she heard a rumbling crash "about that time." Mrs. Lusk said no one investigated the noise. The car was found by two youths, J.T. Lusk, 15, grandson of Mrs. Lusk, and Carlos Hughes, also 15. "We were crossing the bridge about 9 o'clock this morning," the Hughes boy said. "A man was fishing off the bridge, and he said he believed a big rock was out in the middle of the creek. We looked and saw the car, with a man's arm sticking out one of the windows. I told him that was a car, and not a rock, and I believed somebody was in it." The nearest telephone was at the Glendale filling station, several miles away. The county jail was notified, and jail officials sent a Coulter ambulance and a Chattanooga garage wrecker to the creek bridge. The ambulance attendants, Cliff Lindsey and Leroy Gibbs, were unable to reach the submerged car, and waited until the wrecker arrived. J.C. Carnahan, garage employee, smashed a rear window, through which he placed a cable hook, allowing the wrecker crew to pull the car to the far bank of the creek. "We got the car to the bank before we got the bodies out." Carnahan said. "The tail-lights were still burning, but the headlights were out. Pickett was in the front seat. He was holding to the steering wheel with one hand and the other hand was out the left-door window. I saw Lumpkin lying on the floor between the front and rear seats. He was lying on his back, with the back seat loosened from its fastenings, just a few inches from him." As the car was pulled to the bank, a toy sailboat and a rubber ball belonging to Lumpkin's 4-year-old son floated out and were carried away by the stream, swollen by recent rains. The car left the road at a curve at the bridge approach, a few feet inside the Hamilton County line. Apparently traveling toward Whitwell, the car, a new machine, swerved across the highway to the left, barely missed the bridge abutment and crashed over a boulder extending from the creek bed to the roadway, a distance of more than thirty feet. The machine lay on the creek bed, parallel with the bridge. It's steel top was crushed in, indicating the car turned at least one somersault, and the front end was smashed. Lumpkin, owner of the automobile, apparently was riding in the front seat with Pickett and was thrown into the back of the car during the plunge. Neither man appeared to have received broken bones or other injuries. leading police to believe that death was due to drowning. "They were probably stunned or knocked out, and drowned before regaining consciousness." county police officers said. The garage crew removed the car after more than four hours work. The recovery necessitated the chopping down of several small trees in the path of the wrecker cables. It would have been impossible to pull the car to the road up the bank from which it dropped, the wrecker crew said. Lumpkin, a former Chickamauga Dam employee, was identified through the license number of the car. Pickett was identified through papers and receipts in his pockets. Lumpkin's wife, Mrs. Kathleen Lumpkin, said her husband left their home about 2:30p.m. Friday. "I haven't seen him since." she stated. "I don't know Pickett and I don't know how they got together." she said.
