JOHANNES ALBRECHT (HENDRICH) was born 19 Dec 1697 in Austria, and died Abt. 1751 in Pennsylvania, Lancaster Co. He married ANNA BARBARA GOSSAUER Abt. 1718 in Austria, daughter of HANS GOSSAUER and REGULA MAURER. She was born Abt. 1697 in Austria, and died Aft. 1751 in Pennsylvania
Johannes Albrecht, filled with courage and deep religious conviction to interpret the Bible as he understood it and finding the situation in Europe intolorable, chose to come to America. It was the begining of 1732 when he bade farewell to friends and relatives in Austria and sailed to America with his wife and 5 children. It must have been difficult indeed for Anna Barbara Albrecht, wife of Johannes, to say farewell to relatives and friend in Austria and with her small children, one scarcley a year old, set sail for the unknown land. It was a perilous journey. "In the first place, the small ships were packed too full. The food consisted of salted corned meat and pork, peas, barley, groats, and cod fish. The drink was stinking water in which all food was cooked. The people aboard the ship were plauged with lice. As they made there journey across the ocean there was the danger of storms and pirates. ( History of Evangelical Church)
It took about 8 months to make the trip across the ocean. Only the religious intolerance of Austria and thier own courage could have persuaded the Albrechts to go to the unknown land where further hardships awaited them. But in spite of hardships on the ships, whenever possible they brought a bit of homeland with them. The Albrecht family came to America from Rotterdam on board the Galley "Johnson" and entered the country at the Port of Philadelphia on September 18 1732. The Albrecht family settled in a beautiful spot in western Lancaster Co. It became Berks Co in 1752.
